Description | Please join us for the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Ian Harper, who will present on the evening of Wednesday 21st February 2018 in King Khalid Lecture Theatre, Surgeon’s Hall, University of Edinburgh on the topic of ‘Tuberculosis Control and Global Health’. Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the highest infectious disease burdens in the world today. This lecture looks at global attempts to control TB over the last twenty five years. Focusing particularly on Nepal, it charts the shifts in policy and approach, and how the striving to deal with the disease is translated in practice. The focus on TB provides the platform to critically assess the rise of “global health” over this period. The lecture will simultaneously ask what are the contributions that an anthropological understanding of TB and its control can offer to this global challenge? I will do so by highlighting my own personal and intellectual journey into anthropology, after an original training in medicine, followed by programmatic and research experience of tuberculosis management in Nepal and South Asia. |
