SoMA is happy to announce next month we will be hosting a special “Meet the Author” book club. This event will be a great opportunity for students and ECRs to discuss an exciting new ethnography with its author, and to ask questions about the research, writing and publishing process more generally.

We will be discussing 'Synthesizing Hope: Matter, Knowledge, and Place in South African Drug Discovery' (2019) with its author Anne Pollock, Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at King's College London. Synthesizing Hope draws on research at a small South African pharmaceutical company that was founded with the mission of finding new drugs for TB, HIV, and malaria, and explores how it matters who makes pharmaceutical knowledge and where.

Important note: Synthesizing Hope is not due to be officially published until May, but Anne has kindly provided us with PDF proofs so that we can have a sneak peak of the book ahead of publication! If you would like to participate in this event, please email me at to request the PDF proofs.

As always, all are welcome to attend and lunch will be provided. You do not have to read the entire book and can instead select a chapter to read here:

We look forward to seeing you there!
