"Making people care"
A perspective by Dr Alice Street in The Lancet, January 23rd, 2016.
“Why don't some health workers care?” is a question I have often asked myself in the decade since I began research as a medical anthropologist in Papua New Guinea. One day, at a small health centre in the remote Usino-Bundi district, I watched as the lone staff member, a community health worker, sent home a mother and her limp 6-month-old baby with a fever. The mother had walked for 4 hours over steep forested hills and humid river valleys to reach the health centre and had waited there for 3 hours while the health worker finished his shopping and chewed betel nut with friends at the local market.
