Atelier Event: Things, Assemblages, Time
Date and Time
5th Feb 2018 17:00 19:00
Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 1

In this talk Chris Fowler will consider an important paradox that emerges from non-representational and new materialist theory, and outline a way through it: are things products of relationships, or do they have some essential properties? The talk will outline one way through this paradox provided by a reading of assemblage theory. It will explore this approach through engagement with Early Bronze Age grave goods. While the approach stresses the relational nature of things and eschews any notion of essences, it will also argue for the value of quite conventional tools, particularly typology, in appreciating the relationality of things.
