The last decade has seen the emergence of a multispecies ethnography as a new type of anthropological study that looks beyond the human. But is this really a new development and does it deserve a sub-discipline of its own? Anthropology has always included the exploration of relations between humans and the land, material objects, animals, gods, spirits, and other beings. What does a focus on non-human life mean for our own work and what does it add to anthropology as a discipline?
