During recent years, the Warao Amerindians of Venezuela have taken part in many illegal activities, in particular selling state-subsidized food on the black market and exporting fuel to neighboring Guyana. I will show that, in the context of the economic and political collapse of the country, it represents for them of way of claiming full Venezuelan citizenship, which is primarily conceived of as partaking in national wealth. I will also argue that this manner of being Venezuelan is largely compatible with Amerindian forms of sociality.
