Dr Alexander Smith wins Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship

Dr Alexander Smith (PhD Social Anthropology 2006) has been awarded a prestigious, two-year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, which he will commence in September 2008.

Based in the Department of Sociology at the University of Birmingham (), he will carry out ethnographic fieldwork in Kansas City as part of a new, postdoctoral research project entitled 'Faith and Science: fissures in UK and US politics'.  Dr Smith will explore how recent policy debates over embryonic stem cell research have exposed deep, moral fissures amongst American conservatives on the central Constitutional question of the relationship between Church and State in US democracy.  Contributing to debates about the complex interface between politics, religion and science in post-secular societies, a later part of the project will involve the elaboration of a comparative focus with the UK, where the potential also exists for faith groups to mobilise in democratic politics.
