Alan Barnard awarded ESRC grant for EuroBABEL

Alan Barnard has been awarded an ESRC grant, EuroBABEL Kinship systems in southern African non-Bantu languages: documentation, comparison and historical analysis. January 2010 to December 2012. The grant is for £263,457.13, and it includes three researchers:  Professor Alan Barnard, Dr Gertrud Boden (presently attached to the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig), and a PhD student.

EuroBABEL is short for the European Collaborative Research (Eurocores) scheme Better Analyses Based on Endangered Languages, and the project is attached to the larger EuroBABEL project, The Kalahari Basin area: a Sprachbund on the verge of extinction, which includes Alans project plus four others, from other countries.

The attached studentship will be an ESRC +3 award starting in September 2010, and anyone wishing to apply for this should contact Alan for further details. Normally, the candidate will be expected to have completed an MSc by Research (or equivalent) by that date.
