Lost Kingdoms of Africa

Edinburgh anthropologist involved in new BBC documentary on African History.

Lost kingdoms of Africa is a new 4 part BBC documentary series on African history, currently being shown on BBC 4. It focuses on different pre-colonial state systems in sub-saharan Africa, including Nubia, Ethiopia and the Zimbabwe Culture. Joost Fontein acted as a consultant for the third episode focusing on Great Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe, which was the subject of his monograph The Silence of Great Zimbabwe: Contested Landscapes and the Power of Heritage, 2006, UCL Press.
