Hsiao-Chiao Chiu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2017-2020) on the European Research Council-funded project 'A Global Anthropology of Transforming Marriage' (AGATM, PI Professor Janet Carsten) and will be carrying out ethnographic research in Taiwan and China from summer 2017.

She completed her PhD at London School of Economics and Political Science (2017) on the continuities and changes of Chinese kinship groups in Jinmen in relation to the island’s long-term militarisation against the Cold War context. Her focus was on the roles of kinship and rituals in sustaining the patterns of life and social relationships through the previous turbulent period of military uncertainties, and in affecting the local political and economic lives in the present of demilitarisation and democratisation.
