Hsiao-Chiao Chiu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2017-2020) on the European Research Council-funded project 'A Global Anthropology of Transforming Marriage' (AGATM, PI Professor Janet Carsten). She is responsible for a sub-project '‘Marriage under contrastive economic and political regimes in Taiwan and China, focusing on the island of Jinmen’. Based on her twelve months of fieldwork in Jinmen between 2017 and 2018,  she is now working on a monograph on transforming marriage in Jinmen in relation to the broader political dynamics in the region framed by the Cold War and the lingering issue of Taiwan-China relation.

She completed her PhD at London School of Economics and Political Science (2017) on the continuities and changes of Chinese kinship groups in Jinmen in relation to the island’s long-term militarisation against the backdrop of the Cold War geopolitics. Her focus was on the roles of kinship and rituals in sustaining the patterns of life and social relationships through the previous turbulent period of military uncertainties, and in affecting the local political and economic lives in the present of demilitarisation and democratisation.
