Social Anthropology: Research

Borders, Citizenship and Migration

UK Passport

Attempts to control and regulate migration pose particular challenges for contemporary anthropology, raising questions about the status of human rights for migrants as well as the meanings, limitations and potential of legal claims to citizenship.

Our research takes place in diverse fieldsites - from the Indo-Nepal and Bangladeshi borderlands to the tribunals in which asylum seekers engage with UK immigration policy - exploring the diverse political and legal struggles of internally displaced people and transnational migrants over collective identities, rights and entitlements.
