Maternity and Migration among Somali Refugees in Nairobi, Kenya
My research is on reproductive health and maternity among Somalis living in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi, commonly referred to as 'Mogadishu Kidogo' (Little Mogadishu). During my fieldwork (November 2009 - June 2011) I examined how displacement and desires for onward migration affect decisions relating to marriage, reproduction and health. Furthermore, I explored how such decisions are navigated within an urban context, with particular focus on perceptions of security, kinship, religion and femininity.
